27th SciFY Academy: STEAM Education
How Interdisciplinarity and Art transform the learning experience

One of the hottest topics at the moment in the field of education is STEM Education and not unfairly. But what about Art? Can Art find a place within the STEM education? Yes. And that's exactly what the 27th SciFY Academy is about: "STEAM Education | How Interdisciplinarity and Art transform the learning experience". On Wednesday, 19th of December, we organized the last SciFY Academy Seminar of the year at INNOVATHENS, where teachers and students of various scientific fields and arts had the opportunity to learn that Art can be integrated into a STEM Education program while enhancing its results.

Initially, Mr. Aris Mavromatis from STEM Education Organization laid the groundwork for our discussion, talking about the basic STEM principles and how to integrate into formal and informal education programs, presenting the implemented educational actions of STEM Education Organization. Also, Mr. Mavromatis explained to us the role of Art in these programs and proved us to be an integral part of science.

Then Mr. Apostolos Papanikolaou from the Herakleidon Museum showed us how we can combine sciences such as Mathematics with Art through applied examples. While referring to a very successful training program that is already in progress.

You can see the video of the event here (in Greek).

We warmly thank INNOVATHENS as well as all of you where you once again contributed to realizing our vision of the free dissemination of knowledge!

26th SciFY Academy
Teaching Astronomy using Digital Tools

The participants of the 26th SciFY Academy: "Teaching Astronomy using Digital Tools" had the chance to take part in a unique experience on Thursday 29th of November at INNOVATHENS. Researchers, teachers and students of science, especially Astrophysics, as well as people interested in Astronomy attended this interactive event organized by SciFY - Science For You along with SciCo - Science Communication.

The aim of the seminar was how can we teach astronomy in the digital age and bring students back to the science that allows them to dream? So we had the opportunity to provide concrete ideas, practical ways and digital tools to the creative educators of the country to help disseminate interest in Astronomy.

SciFY, in particular, Vasilis Giannakopoulos presented us with educational games that SciFY created: "The Moondiver Xperience" the new free astronomy educational game for tablets and smartphones where participants had the chance to try live at the seminar . Then Mr. Vasilis Giannakopoulos presented two more Astronomy games through the Memor-i Studio platform, where everyone can easily create their own educational game.

SciCo then brought the participants into contact with both experiential and digital teaching methods relating to the exploration of space. They presented educational platforms where they were informed about games, digital scenarios of exploratory learning and citizen science projects for introducing students to the fascinating world of astronomy researchers. Participants also took part in experiential activities, using augmented reality applications where they saw our solar system three-dimensionally and explored the red planet.

You can see the speakers presentations as well as the video of the event here (in Greek).

We warmly thank INNOVATHENS and SciCo as well as all of you where you once again contributed to realizing our vision of the free dissemination of knowledge!

24th SciFY Academy
Artificial Intelligence & Data in Journalism

On Thursday, September 20th, people from fields such as Technology, Information Technology, Journalism, etc were found for another seminar at INNOVATHENS for the first seminar of the new  academic year. SciFY Academy for September and October deals with Artificial Intelligence and Data as tools and how they are used in various scientific fields. Specifically, we refer to the role and applications of new technologies and Artificial Intelligence in Social and Human Sciences.

In September, the first part of the series, the 24th SciFY Academy had the topic: "AI & Data in Journalism" focusing on Journalism where we learned that a journalist can do better and faster research by using open data using Artificial Intelligence tools.

First, Dr. Michalis Vafopoulos from NCSR Demokritos spoke to us about the Google DNI OpJ project, which aims to reinforce the re-use of open economic data by facilitating search and access to the original source of data.

Then Dr. Georgios Petassis, also a researcher at NCSR Demokritos and CEO of Intellitech, presented us with examples (YourDataStories Project) so that we can visualize and analyze open government data to understand and exploit them for purposes of transparency and anti-corruption.

Finally, Dr. Giorgos Giannakopoulos, scientist at SciFY and researcher at NCSR Demokritos analyzed how a NewSum application could be a solution for extracting abstracts from many sources and thousands of news in a way that allows quick and efficient information distribution, always with reference to sources, while maintaining the possibility of verification. Indeed, the fact that this particular application, NewSum, works independently in language, which strengthens journalists and citizens around the world so that the impact could be multiplied.

You can see all event presentations here (in Greek).

We warmly thank INNOVATHENS as well as all of you where you once again contributed to realizing our vision of the free dissemination of knowledge!

23th SciFY Academy
Technology in Ancient Greece

The ancient Greek and Hellenistic technology was the subject of the 23rd SciFY Academy on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at INNOVATHENS.

Professor Theodosis Tassios led us to a charming historic journey from mythology to the beginnings of the Roman Empire.

Ancient Greek culture is impregnated with love in technology, and is practically reflected in its impressive growth in dozens of different areas.

Favored by the social and economic conditions of the time, the ingenuity of the Greeks has inherited amazing samples of technological innovation and application at every level - from small objects and games to large-scale construction projects.

War machines, river diversions, metering mechanisms, aqueducts, automated mines, medicine, machine components, telecommunications, pumps, shipbuilding and dozens of others create a constantly growing list that culminates in the wondrous mechanism of Antikythera.

You can watch Mr. Tassio's entire presentation here (in Greek).

The challenge: People with disabilities continue to be disproportionately excluded from the labour market Europe-wide.
Vocational education and training (VET) plays a crucial role, as it acts as the joint between school education and the working world.

The Solution: How information and communication technologies (ICT) can be helpful in making VET more inclusive and therefore in better preparing learners for the labour market is the content of our new ERASMUS+ project EICON. We just met experts from all around Europe to exchange good practice and to develop effective solutions.

Other similar meetings are scheduled in the coming months that will focus on specific topics and discuss how ICT can be supportive to raise an organisation’s inclusive capacity. This first meeting dealt with the pedagogy in VET organisations and with different teaching and learning approaches. Participants from six organisations from Finland, Sweden, Portugal, Greece and Germany exchanged effective practice and discussed first recommendations for teachers and managers of VET organisations.

Results and Impact: Draft results will soon be shared publicly so that educators around Europe can add their experiences and successful examples. Through this consultation process the results will be consolidated and more likely to fit to the different settings of VET organisations across Europe.

What's next: In our second meeting we will focus on technology and infrastructure.

EnSoEd: Innovative teacher training on social entrepreneurship

The EnSoEd project aims to support teachers in their efforts to continuous professional development in order to be able to offer and promote social entrepreneurship education.
The program will follow the European lifelong learning approach through the application of practical and innovative instruments and tools.

In order to help teachers to be able to offer Social Entrepreneurship Education to their students, we have set the following goals:

  • Strengthen the profile of the teaching professions and help them acquire a better and in-depth knowledge and become more active in the Social Entrepreneurship sector;
  • Disseminate understanding and promotion of social entrepreneurship competence in Europe;
  • Create transversal and European networks and infrastructures for the promotion of social entrepreneurship education;
  • Enforce the ‘social’ structure of the European economy, shedding lights on its benefits and added values at social, cultural and economic level;
  • Develop a conducive ecosystem that helps social enterprises to start, evolve and develop and are equipped with a proper social entrepreneurial spirit (rather than grant-oriented).

The tools that we will develop and offer for free to the trainers in order to be better educated in Social Entrepreneurship are:

  • Social entrepreneurship competences
  • Training programme for teachers
  • ToolKit on social entrepreneurship
  • Online learning platform

We are already working on the first tool and soon we will share here our first results.

We are sharing knowledge and good practices while working towards our goal with 8 other very valuable partners from all around Europe.

Participation at ActionAid's Program: EPIKENTRO

We support ActionAid and the EPIKENTRO program in their effort to strengthen vulnerable social groups and fellow citizens who have been affected by the financial crisis.

Our contribution is to educate students in topics such as IT and Internet.
More specifically, the children of primary education attend the lesson: "Internet: a labyrinth to be discovered!" where they are getting familiarized with the Internet and learn more about their safe use.

While older children, in high school are following the introductory lesson in computer science: "Create your own game!" where teens are getting familiarized with programming, audio and video editing tools and above all think creatively and designing an electronic game.

During the two courses, we are training 50 children in 50 training hours!

Training at the Herakleidon Museum: Artificial Intelligence ... For Teenagers

We started another educational action with the Herakleidon Museum, where we introduce students to Artificial Intelligence. The program aims to create a new, more open and conscious attitude towards Artificial Intelligence, through the acquisition of new knowledge and skills.
