16th SciFY Academy | Newton
"The Power of God"

On Thursday 15 of December, SciFY's team organized alongside NCSR "Dimokritos" and INNOVATHENS Hub of Innovation & Entrepreneurship of The Municipality of Athens, the 16th SciFY Academy, where the dramatized documentary produced by Eugenides Foundation and directed by Panos Anestis "Newton, the Power of God" was projected and then followed a discussion with the film makers and researchers of "EKEFE Dimokritos".

In festive and christmas spirit, in the last SciFY Academy for 2016, came students, young researchers, and people who were interested in learning about the life and the work of Sir Isaak Newton, to watch the documentary "Newton, The Power of God" and to participate in the discussion about the stereotypes regarding scientists and researchers, their interaction with society and ways for better dissemination of the results of science to public.

In the beginning, the event started with Dr Giannakopoulos, who talked about the collaboration between SciFY and EKEFE Dimokritos and presented some projects that were developed by this collaboration, such as Newsum and PServer.

Later, followed the projection of the documentary accompanied with pop-corn. The interest was great since by watching this extraordinary documentary we had the chance to see aspects of the work and his personality less known to public.

After the end of the projection, followed a discussion. The panel of speakers consisted of : Dr George Giannakopoulos Technical Director in SciFY & Researcher in the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR Dimokritos, Lida Arnellou Doctor of Science Communication at the University of Peloponnese, Dimitris Petakos Doctor of History of Science at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Panos Anestis screenwriter/director, Historian of Sciences and Ph.D. in the Department of Cinema at APT and Vasilis Konstandoudis Physicist, Doctor, Researcher at the Microelectronics Institute of NCSR Dimokritos.

Regarding the stereotypes that exist for scientists and researchers even today, Ms. Leda Arnellou mentioned the example of David Gijbels. In the early 80's he went to schools and told the children to paint a scientist in a white paper. What the children painted was a bearded man with a white robe, around objects such as test tubes, a skeleton, books, a computer and the DNA chain. It has been repeated since then, the same, between the ages of 5 and 19 in various countries of the world, and what is observed is that all children of any age, all over the world, are painting the same.

Speakers, among other things, about how stereotypes affect us, reported that images are affecting us. Science is perceived as something outside society. Children do not want to become scientists because it is difficult. There is still today the hierarchy between scientific disciplines.

Regarding the role of woman in science, Leda Arnellou said that the scientist is always portrayed as a man, and if it is a woman then it has been painted by a woman. In the film, the woman's role is more psychoanalytic, as the director of the documentary Panos Anestis said, as Newton's mother, abandoned him and returned after years having other children as well.

When asked how scientists see themselves in society, Mr. Vasilis Konstandoudis, preferred the term researcher by the term scientist and mentioned as a student. Who must leave arrogance and selfishness and come closer to society. He pointed that scientific methodology should be more sociocentric. Dr George Giannakopoulos added that the science center is a community like any other community, with its particularities, policy, working environment.

Following the debate, the need for a better link between science and society was emphasized. The collaboration and interaction with other specialties and parts of society. An example mentioned by Mrs Leda Arnellou is the zooniverse in which everyone is allowed to participate in an investigation or to make their own. Also, Mr. Petakos has mentioned that historically, farmers, fishermen, professionals in general in a field, had better know-how than the researchers trying to see in their field. Moreover, Dr. Giannakopoulos stated that it is a mistake to try solving a problem, without asking the ones that have it. The particularities of a society must be respected and it is very important to identify the real needs and not to generate other needs.

As a conclussion, mr Petakos said that it is the scientist's obligation to study thoroughly. Ms Arnellou stated, that the internet is an ocean of information whereas there is also misinformation, so the existence of tools, criteria is essential, so that the facts are crosschecked from various sources in the future.

We sincerely thank all the speakers and contributors of the documentary that attended the event, INNOVATHENS and of course all those who came up with very interesting comments and questions and mainly because they contributed once more to realizing our vision of free dissemination of knowledge!

15th SciFY Academy | Work Socially
"Social Impact: Make the first steps"

On Wednesday November 23, SciFY's team, co operated with INNOVATHENS Hub of Innovation & Entrepreneurship of The Municipality of Athens, one more seminar and workshop, about Social entrepreneurship.

15th SciFY Academy 1

As every time before, representatives of the academic, research and business sector, as well as students of various schools, and people who want to create or participate in a social enterprise, have come to INNOVATHENS to attend the 15th SciFY Academy on: "Social Impact: Make the first steps".

In one of the last SciFY Academies for 2016, the main speaker was Ms Matina Kanaki, a supporter of social entrepreneurship and one of the most active members in the field for the last 20 years, where she introduced us to the concepts of Social Entrepreneurship and its social impact. The seminar was divided into two parts, the presentation made by Ms Kanaki and the lab, where the participants had the chance to apply their knowledge, planning and implementing the steps of their concept of a social enterprise.

15th SciFY Academy 02

The interest of the participants was great throughout the whole seminar with various questions in both parts of the seminar.

Initially, in the first part of the event, ms Kanaki presented the conditions, meaning and the values of social economy and enterpreneurship, pointing out that its difference from private business is the social mission, that it brings some values to bring a social change and a social impact. At the same time, it has a twofold goal, the solving of a social problem and the profit as well, since if the product remains an idea and is not bought, it won't be viable. On the other hand the target of a social enterprise should not be the filling of new positions but the delimitation of the appropriate business model.

15th SciFY Academy 03

She then referred to good and meaningful examples of social enterprises in Greece and abroad, giving the participants the opportunity to elaborate and analyze the frameworks in which an idea can transform into a sustainable social enterprise.

The European Research Network EMES (EMES European Research Network http://emes.net/) specialized in social enterprise issues, economy and public participation, has dealt in many of it's publications with the ideal Social Enterprise, where among others it has multi-participation, democratic decision-making, profit-sharing control for achieving a greater social impact.

15th SciFY Academy 04

The second and main part of the event was devoted to the workshop of the creation  of a hypothetical social corporation. The participants, divided into subgroups and under the guidance of Ms Kanaki and her associates, had the opportunity to design a social company and apply what they had learned. Following six key steps, they began to develop their own social initiative by solving through the discussion and the guidance of experienced mentors, questions related to the first steps of creating a social enterprise.

15th SciFY Academy 05

Due to the limited time, Ms Kanaki focused more on the financial and management part of creating a company, as, according to her presentation, this is where the biggest difficulties of sustainability of Greek Social Entrepreneurship are identified.

In summary, the six basic steps of creating and operating a Social Company are:

  1. Short description: Of the idea or the service.
  2. Product Identification: features, competitors, peculiarities.
  3. Market definition: target, target group, market entry barriers, ways to resolve them.
  4. Marketing Plan: "4 Ps" (Product, Place, Price, Promotion) Placement of the Company in the Market (depending on the product) and price differentiation based on it. How to promote the product, how to advertise.
  5. Management & Organization: Description of its function, who are its people (Roles, Responsibilities), what facilities does it have and which are needed.
  6. Financial Forecast: What are the investments and the operating costs, what is the time needed to cover these costs, which is the Break Even Point?

Through the information portal on the actions of the Social Cooperative Enterprises for all Greece, interested parties can obtain important information on the topic http://koinsep.org/

We sincerely thank Ms Matina Kanaki, her associates, INNOVATHENS and of course all who attended and participated actively in the workshop but also throughout the event, making very interesting comments and questions and mainly because they contributed once more to the realization of the vision for the free dissemination of knowledge!

14th SciFY Academy "Open Data. Now!"

14th SciFY Academy | Open Data
"Open Data. Now!"

On Wednesday October 26, as a part of the project Your Data Stories, SciFY, ODI Athens of Open Technologies Organization - ΕΕLLΑΚ and SKEL Lab of NCSR "Demokritos" co operated for making a series of presentations related to Open Data.

The speeches were hosted by distinguished business executives and experts in this research field, presenting innovative projects that promote the exploitation and evolution of data, not only for the development of the economy and business, but also for dealing with everyday and social problems.

As we learned from the speeches, the technology and business community are investing in the future and the developing of Big Data, looking for mechanisms and platforms to maximize the use of the data and metadata. Identifying and analyzing them helps us to discern the really useful information and to separate it from the "noise", to judge its credibility and ultimately to anticipate with greater certainty the future situations and market trends, even social behavior.

Lastly, extra emphasis was placed on the ways to maintain the balance between the privacy and the openness of the data, thus covering the legal aspects of the issue. It is worth noting that despite the great participation of speakers at the event, the content of the presentations was comprehensive, in-depth and gave an integrated approach of the subject, both at the business and at the research levels.

Moreover, despite the technical expertise around Open Data, the speakers ensured the smooth transmission of information, making them understandable even to the less experienced audience. Perhaps this was due to the large response of the participants in the final stage of the event that followed, that of the open debate and questions.

13th SciFY Academy | Big Data
"From Infrastructure to Implementation"

On Wednesday, October 19thSciFYΕΕΛΛΑΚ and INNOVATHENS, organized the first seminar  of this Academic year on Big DataUp to 120 people attended the 13th SciFY Academy where Dr. Konstantinos Tsakalozos and Dr. George Giannakopoulos introduced us to the topic of Big Data.

The event opened by Mr. Vassilis Giannakopoulos, Marketing Director & Impact Manager at SciFY, who presented the free and open source assistive technology platform Talk and Play. The project is being developed by SciFY with an exclusive donation from Stavros Niarchos Foundation. This prototype system allows people who have disabilities and also speech difficulties : to communicate, listen to music, watch movies and play tailored-made, specialized games that enhance their skills and can help them recover.

To access the presentation (in Greek) of Mr. Vasilis Giannakopoulos follow the link: http://go.scify.gr/sfacIN13PrVG

In the following session, Dr Konstantinos Tsakalozos, Software Developer - Big Data at Canonical Ltd., started by mentioning the origins of big data and reasons for using big data solution. Data increase as your activities expand. For instance as your business grows it produces increasingly more data. Also, nowadays it is easy to efficiently gather all these large amounts of data. The conventional processing methods, however, are not applicable for storing and processing this kind of data volume. Thus, it is necessary for you and your business to utilize big data technology, in order to process the continually increasing data, effectively. In turn, the generated knowledge will lead to better decision making.

Big Data Software solutions often tend to be complex, requiring staff training and overall are hard to integrate. What we really need, Mr. Tsakalozos informs us, is to lower the operational costs of modeling and implementing your big data solutions.

Mr. Tsakalozos presented the Juju platform from Canonical. Juju builds an ecosystem that enables easy setup and access to infrastructures, including big data systems. This ecosystem allows you to implement applications (charms) in any language (Puppet, Ansible, Bash, Python, Java); to take advantage of applications implemented by other vendors and to collaborate with other providers within the community. To access the presentation of  Dr. Konstantinos Tsakalozos follow the linkhttp://go.scify.gr/sfacIN13PrKT

For more information about juju platform, see:

In the last session of the seminar, Dr. George Giannakopoulos, CTO at SciFY & Researcher at  Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR Demokritos, referred to the application of big data in a variety of cases, from social media analysis, to bioinformatics and wind turbine proactive maintenance! He stressed that “big data” is not only about “much” data, i.e. the volume is not their only distinctive feature. Other features of data, indicative of a problem of "big data" are also the speed of data change (velocity), the variety of forms and ways data are found (variety), the possibility of their validation (veracity) and the value generated by them, allowing action and reaction (value). Then, Mr. Giannakopoulos referred to the Big Data Europe Project [1], an international project funded by the EU, which brings 16 organizations from 10 European countries in a partnership for the future of "big data" in Europe. The 7 project development pilots are aligned with the societal challenges of the Horizon 2020 framework [2], covering domains such as: 1) Health, 2) Food & Agriculture, 3) Energy, 4) Transport, 5) Climate, 6) Social Sciences and 7) Security.
